Maggie Holmes

25/04/2011

She’s only been in our lives for a week – but now we just can’t let Maggie go ! Say hello to the latest addition to the Holmes’ household – Maggie. Full original name Magdeline – but Jack couldn’t handle that.  I did some charity work for The Dog’s Trust at Harefield just outside London a few weeks ago and I was bowled over by the good work they do and shocked by the task they faced in rehoming dogs – too many of which I am ashamed to say come from Ireland.

I went away with the thought that perhaps I could do more. Ruth and I had been under some pressure from our son Jack for some time to get a dog – this was now the perfect excuse. Visit Dogs Trust Harefield just for a look – they have amazing facilities and a nice tea room – it’s more like a zoo than a hostel. To say that we chose Maggie would be wrong . Miss Maggie chose us – though it was nearly not to be.

On my first visit I noticed her , but when I tried to reserve her I was told she had been adopted by another family. Three weeks went by when I returned with Ruth and Jack , and guess what ? Maggie’s owners had got full time work and couldn’t keep her all day. When I asked to see her , well she licked the faces off us – she had us at those first soppy kisses. The Trust then vet you and visit your home to see if it and you are suitable dog owners. We didn’t know if we were, as we hadn’t owned one before, but we passed all the criteria. But we haven’t felt alone – someone from The Trust is always there on the end of a phone if we need them. I’m not sure if our lives will be the same again – but so far everything seems to have changed for the better. We do more things as a family, with Maggie the focus of all that and I’m sure my blood pressure is lower – such is her calming effect. And she’s different. We don’t know exactly what breed she is – but there seems to be Border Collie there and maybe Daschund? Jack Russell ? Rat crossed with fox ? Anyway something big crossed with something small , and she has the most wonderful temperament . She rarely barks, and is incredibly loving. We’ve also been amazed at how many people want to stop and talk to you if you have a dog – Maggie has introduced us to a whole new wave of people both in the park and on Twitter. If this keeps up we’ll have to give her her own page ! Woof woof .

  • We have 10 dogs. A lab, two lab ridgeback crosses six teckels (working dachshunds and a local village dog. a couple of weeks ago we lost our three year old ridgeback. He collapsed and couldn't breath and died. we were mystified and heartbroken. Saturday gone I went out to the back garden where the two ridgeback/labs and the smallest of our teckels were. The teckel, Daisy, was standing over a 2 mtr balck mamba which fortunately was very dead. The 6kg Teckel was sitting there so proud. at least we now know what happened to Scout the Ridgeback. At least you won't have those worries for Maggie. She will make a huge difference on you all. I wait with interest to see how long it is before you get her a friend. That's how we started..... Be warned. Best wishes to you, Ruth and Jack

  • Your life changes for the better for having dogs. They give you unconditional love. We have 2 rescue springer spaniels and they are family, now that our children are grown up and gone. Good on you for taking her, she looks adoreable!

  • Maggie looks just like our first dog Bonnie. She was a flat coat retriever cross and lived until she was 17. She brought up two children and all their friends! Cherish Maggie 'cos your first is very special - we have had five dogs in 44 years. Lucky Maggie, lucky Holmes family!
